Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre

by Maggie Guy, Deputy Head

The Year 7 tutors and I wanted to convey how very pleased we were with the group who went to Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre just before half term.

The pupils were a credit to themselves and the school; they worked together sensibly, and approached the sometimes very demanding study sessions with openness and interest.

Within five minutes of arriving and having a drink and biscuits, we had our first compliment from a former teacher, who was impressed with their politeness. The staff organising our programme were delighted with their enthusiastic response not just to our walk through Bournville to the Cadbury factory, but also engaging with challenging topics like Quaker beliefs and testimony and Quaker decision making in practice, where Year 7 had to make important decisions using this demanding process. You will be amazed to know that on the last day, when we went to Meeting for Worship with other residents, all of our pupils sat still and reflected quietly for over 20 minutes. One young man (usually a bit of a fidget) said he felt the time had gone quickly!

In addition to being a helpful introduction to some of the key concepts of Quakerism, it was also an excellent opportunity for our young people to socialise and bond as a year group – this they achieved with gusto. I was also deeply heartened to see how well they looked after each other. There were no tears at bedtime, and no falling out as they worked together.

Behaviour, without exception, was excellent throughout the visit. They were a pleasure to be with, a truly delightful group of pupils.
