Thomas Woolley -"How the fish got its spots"
Alan Turing was a computer logician (before there were computers), an essential code breaker of World War II (tragically misunderstood) and a mathematical biologist (before the subject existed).
By taking a brief tour of only some of his achievements we will see just how far ahead of his time he was. Our final focus will be on one of his most beautiful ideas: the creation of biological complexity from simplicity, or, how the fish got its spots.
Wednesday 25th April 2012:
Ed Hutchinson - "Bacteria and viruses: getting to know your closest companions"
Our bodies are habitats for huge numbers of invisibly small organisms. A small proportion can be dangerous, but most of them are harmless and some help to keep us alive.
